The young adults section is a wonderful place for teens to hang out, study, read, and get out of the house. I do not own a car, and even if I did, most places you have to pay to get to exist there, which is frustrating when you have little to no money. Downtown Marion has become my sole hangout outside of my house, work, and school due to how walkable it is, and visiting the Carnegie Library is how I like to end that experience.
It’s peaceful, the bathrooms are clean (though the women’s bathroom on the 2nd floor has an issue with the flushing sensors always going off. You can solve this by putting a piece of toilet paper on the sensor before using the toilet and taking it off when you’re done), and it is the sole reason I get my homework done on time. The technology lab also offers free, hands-on classes that I have joined in on after work and found to be very useful (the car maintenance class taught me how to check my oil and tire pressure, for whenever I get a car in the future). The little picnic table in the back is great for getting some fresh air and a place to eat after studying in the library. The librarians are kind, helpful, and not disruptive of your experience. Use the free resources!!

Reviews of Marion Carnegie Library
Everyone here is wonderful and helpful and they have a wonderful book sale too
I love this place! Whether it's attending events and activities, like storytime and the monthly book club, I always enjoy my time at the library! The staff is friendly and helpful, always sure to help you with whatever you need. The building is beautiful and historic. You can find almost any book you could want, and if they don't have it here, the librarians are more than happy to put out a hold for you! Also, be sure to check out the quarterly book sales!! 🩷
I grew up in Portland Oregon where they have three functioning Carnegie libraries.
Just something about them they're extra special
It's a typical library, good selection of books and several computers that can be accessed. They have movies but the selection is very limited. Still a nice place to go for a relaxing quiet time or a good book.
Update: Getting a replacement library card was very easy, just had to show proof of address and it was done 👍
Historical Library with a beautiful Architectural Exterior. I have visited 3 floors in this library. There is a children's area downstairs and a teen section on the upper floor. There are computers available for the public to use for members and guests. I am always greeted with a smile and the associates are patient and knowledgeable. If you are new to the area this would be a good place to start your search for things to do in Southern Illinois.
Some other nice amenities are free wi-fi, printing at 10 cents a page for black and white pages, two quiet rooms for study and a small section of Williamson County archives.
